If you’re looking for some of the best hikes in Moab, you’ve come to the right place. The splendor of Moab’s Great Wilderness draws thousands of nature lovers and adventure seekers to Utah every year. With its amazing hiking trails and breathtaking views, Moab is an unparalleled destination for nature lovers. The world-class terrain is something you will want to explore again and again!

Awe-Inspiring Hikes in Moab

Descriptions of the Moab outback as otherworldly are not exaggerated. The land is arrayed in amazing contorted rock formations towering over the trails, enormous gorges, and a new surreal panorama over every horizon.

Here are some of the most popular and best hiking trails in Moab:

1. Delicate Arch

Distance: 3.4 miles

Time: 2 to 3 hours

Elevation: 486 feet

Challenges: Steep grade in parts, virtually no shade

The Delicate Arch Trail is the most popular sight in Arches National Park. The trail leads up to a natural amphitheater, which surrounds the world-famous Delicate Arch. The rather steep ascension of the trail is a little more challenging during Moab’s triple digit summer months, making it a more challenging hike for casual sight-seeing travelers. But for those up to the challenge, the extraordinary view of Delicate Arch will make it clear why it is one of the best-hiking destinations in the United States.

2. Corona Arch

Distance: 1.5 miles

Time: 2 hours

Elevation Gain: 440 feet

Challenges: For intermediate level hikers

Corona Arch, formally known as Little Rainbow Bridge, is a sandstone arch near Moab that features an opening of 140 feet x 105 feet! Getting there requires a moderate level hike that requires hikers to climb ladders and use safety cables to complete portions of the trail. Because this trail is just outside the Arches National Park borders, it is free to hike and less trafficked than other trails inside the park. Leashed dogs are allowed to use this trail, but be sure to bring plenty of water and start the day early if you will be hiking in the peak summer months. Along the hike to Corona Arch, you will pass incredible views of Bowtie Arch and Goldbar Arch.

3. Fisher Towers Trail

Distance: 5.2 miles round trip

Time: 2 to 3 hours

Elevation: 1,217 feet (650 feet gain)

Challenges: Moderate, gradual uphill grade

The strikingly beautiful trail leading to the incomparable Fisher Towers brings hikers through a world of fins, megalithic sandstone walls, and spires. The trail gradually ascends alongside the sheer towers, ultimately reaching the ridge and its panoramic view. The walk is steadily upward but not very steep. The trail strings along with the bases of the successive towers through their adjoining valleys and canyons. The main event of the hike is the hypnotic view of the Titan soaring a staggering 900 feet into the sky, overpowering all the other natural structures. It overlooks the enormous valley below and the Colorado River drifting past. If you’re looking for a different kind of adventure, Fisher Towers rafting trips explore the same area but from the excitement of a raft!

4. Maze Overlook

Distance: 5.3 miles

Time: 3 to 4 hours

Elevation: 5,184 feet (gain of 964 feet)

Challenges: Minimal. Easy hiking

From the Maze Overlook Trail in the Canyonlands National Park, hikers stand over the incredible expanse of the so-called Maze District. It’s a densely cavernous area with many highly challenging trails that test hikers’ endurance with steep grades out of deep canyons and temperatures often exceeding 110 degrees F. The Maze Overlook Trail is not the park’s easiest trail, but it is considered a good introductory experience in preparation for some of Canyonlands’ tougher hiking challenges. The exquisite Maze Overlook Trail features long, gentle switchbacks and comparatively easy walking.

5. Morning Glory aka Ephedra’s Grotto (Experts Only – read below)

Distance: 3 miles

Time: 5 hours

Challenges: 2 rappelling sections that require the assistance of a trained guide.

This excursion goes beyond your average hike, and is what we call canyoneering. This adventure remains accessible to nearly everyone with the support of a Moab canyoneering guide. Morning Glory aka Ephedra’s Grotto is a thrilling 3-mile journey that requires a local guide and is a mix of exciting rappels and a touch of scrambling.

You will begin your Moab canyoneering tour with a brisk traverse across fossilized sand dunes where you’ll reach the first of two rappelling points (90 feet / 27 meters). It’s a breathtaking descent into a timeless, water-sculpted sandstone chamber nestled at the core of the Colorado Plateau. Exiting this mesmerizing chamber through a narrow slot, you’ll navigate a brief stretch of scrambling before arriving at your second awe-inspiring free-hanging rappel (120 feet / 36 meters). This descent is an intimate encounter with the majestic 243-foot-long Morning Glory Arch, mere steps away from the rappel site.

To conclude this epic adventure, you’ll experience a downhill trek alongside a refreshing, spring-fed stream leading to the Colorado River. Here your guides delve into discussions about wildlife, flora, geological formations, local history, and more. Although this is a more technical adventure than an average hike in Moab, its a great option for those looking for a guided trip in a less traveled area.

Just completed our second booking with Red River Adventures. Carl, the owner, is always great at finding the perfect guide for our needs. He arranged a special training course for us and John, our guide and trainer, was fantastic. He helped us get comfortable using the necessary safety tools and equipment for the backcountry. He had a great teaching style that kept us moving and helped us dial in the learning by letting us do it and learning key adjustments to make in real time.

Garth was such an amazing instructor and guide! He was very helpful in not only teaching us about avalanche safety, but really showing us all we need to know and testing our knowledge along the way. My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed the AIARE Level 1 course and am taking away a lot of information, insights, and best practices away. Thank you, Garth!

The AIARE 1 course was top notch! My instructor Sierra Bishop was super knowledgable and passionate about avalanche education. She taught the concepts in a way that was easy to understand and fun to learn. Sierra took care to support each individual's learning and created a group dynamic that was welcoming for beginners but also challenging for those with more experience. We spent a lot of time discussing different scenarios, and Sierra asked thoughtful questions to get us to consider the risks involved. She also taught a bunch of bonus skills like doing kick turns and making your own repair kit. Overall I gained confidence to ski in the backcountry because I am aware of the risks and how to mitigate them. 10/10 experience. I definitely recommend this course for all skill levels!!

This was my 3rd time touring the Wasatch with John from Red River Adventures, but this time with my 11 year old. John was fantastic as always. I was a bit nervous with a lot of avy activity in the area. But, John assured me we would be safe and we kept to lower angle areas where we were out of avy terrain. The day was great and my son loved it! I can't recommend John and RRA enough!

We had an amazing trip for six days of backcountry ski touring with Carl, John, and Mako with Red River Adventures in Hokkaido Japan. The ski touring experience was the best of my life. One glorious untracked powder day after another. It more than filled my expectations. What I did not expect, and got, was also am amazing cultural experience with food and Japanese Onsen culture. It was well beyond anything I had imagined. I of course highly recommend.

Our ice-climbing guide, Ty, quite literally saved my life! We were trying to get some group pictures on the ice when my foot slipped - I fell and started sliding down the mountain. He quickly positioned himself in front of me and used his body to stop me, and then when I was too petrified to stand back up, he used all of his strength to peel me off of the ground and help me slowly make my way off of the ice (meanwhile my friends were unable to breathe from laughing so hard and thus, completely useless). I will probably end up naming my first born child after him because of this experience. He was extremely dedicated to safety - made sure we were helmeted at all times, gloved prior to handling tools, crampons securely fastened, etc. The night before, I expressed pretty severe concern and fear over the whole experience, and he offered tons of reassurance and was so positive and helpful. We plan on taking a trip to Washington in the summer just so he can guide us on a summer adventure too! Thanks Ty!!!

The best experience! Victoria and Avery were extremely great communicators and leaders while being friendly and approachable. I took a woman’s Avalanche 1 course and felt supported and challenged. The skill level of all the women was pretty varied but they helped us come up with a backcountry ski tour plan that would suite us all and be safe. The first day we skied less than 3 miles with ~500 feet of gain, practiced rescue, and dug a snow pit. The second day we skied 3-4 miles with 2000 feet of gain. (Future groups may do more or less depending skills and conditions) While we skied we stopped to point out snow conditions, terrain issues, and touring techniques. The slower teachable pace had us all pretty cold but we were warned and had plenty of layers! We had crazy wind too, so it felt like 0 degrees out, so we did our debrief at a coffee shop. It was perfect!

Brian Johnson and Sam Crow of Red River Adventures were exceptional in their professionalism, thoroughness, kindness, and direction during the AIARE 1 weekend training. Beginning on the first evening, they fostered an atmosphere of inquisitiveness and openness on the zoom portion of the learning. Then, in the field, they created a sense of camaraderie and were attentive to each individuals goals/objectives and abilities. They tailored the learning to the individuals taking the course and inquired to assure that attendee’s objectives were met. I would highly recommend Red River Adventures for avalanche education/backcountry experiences.

Took an Avy Rescue course with Ben today and it was time well spent. He’s a solid instructor who keeps things moving without overcomplicating the technical side. We spent the day drilling the essentials: signal searches, probing, multi burials, and the most efficient way to move snow during a burial. Ben’s feedback during the timed drills was practical and helped me realize where I was wasting movement. Good course for anyone needing to get their rescue systems dialed.

The ARC course was excellent. Ryan is a gifted instructor- very clear, knowledgeable, and thoughtful. The day was very well organized, beginning with a basic review of the many nuances and idiosyncrasies of avalanche transceivers, then on to solo avalanche rescue, and finally group rescues of multiple burials. This is a must-have course - a great annual refresher for the more experienced backcountry skiers in our group and a perfect introduction for those newer to the sport.
